Past summer schools

Edinburgh - Scotland - 2024

The 9th EAWOP Early Career Summer School was organized from 3 rd to 7 th September 2024 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The local organizers were Dr Ishbel McWha-Hermann, Dr Kristina Potocnik, and Dr Tom Calvard from University of Edinburgh Business School.

In total, 23 early career scholars from 10 different countries participated in the summer school, which included a number of different research activities and events:

Keynote presentations by invited leading scholars

• Skills workshops
• Research method workshops
• Group sessions and research presentations
• Networking events
• Social activities (e.g., , visit of Edinburgh Castle)
• Excursions (i.e., the Keil Centre)

Eight leading scholars were invited and participated in the 2024 edition:

• Rosalind Searle, Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow, UK

Bringing in the policy perspective, Ana Catalina Ramirez, Occupational Safety and Health Technical Specialist from the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva (Switzerland) shared insights on how Work and Organizational Psychology can better contribute to the work of the ILO.

Protaras – Cyprus - 2022 

The 8th EAWOP Early Career Summer School was hosted from 7th to 11th June 2022 in Protaras in Cyprus and was funded by EAWOP. The local organizing team consisted of Georgia Thrasyvoulou, Katerina Pavlou, Evie Michaelides, Maria Charalambous, Constantinos Constantinou, and Christos Hadjiyiannis from the Cyprus Institute of Marketing (CIM).

In total, 31 early career scholars from 15 different countries participated in the summer school, which included the following research activities and social events:

• Keynote presentations by invited senior scholars
• Interactive poster sessions
• Roundtables
• Research method workshops
• Skills workshops
• Social activities (opening ceremony, dinner, visits)

Durham – UK (online) - 2021 

The 7th EAWOP Early Career Summer School took place at the University Business School in Durham, United Kingdom, from 14th to 18th  September 2021.
Due to the COVID situation, Olga Epitropaki and her team at Durham University organized the summer school as a virtual event in half-day sessions in 2021 instead of the 2020 live event.

The following six leading scholars were invited to participate in the 2021 online edition:

Heraklion – Greece - 2018

The 6th EAWOP Early Career Summer School was hosted from 2nd to 6th of June 2018 in Heraklion in Crete/Greece and was funded by EAWOP. The local organizing team consisted of Ioannis Nikolaou, Maria Vakola, Konstantina Georgiou, and Vera Lazanaki from Athens University of Economics and Business.

Overall, 33 early career scholars from various countries participated in the summer school, which included a number of different research activities and social events:

• Interactive Poster Sessions
• Research Methods Workshop
• Skills Workshops
• Group Sessions/Roundtables
• Social Activities/Excursions

Birmingham - UK - 2016

The fifth EAWOP Early Career Summer Schools was organized from 12^th to 16^th September 2016 in Birmingham, UK. The local organizers were Dr Alison Legood, Dr Rasphal Dhensa-Kahlon, Dr Yves Guillaume and their team from Aston Business School, Aston University, UK.

Overall, 33 young scientists from 14 European countries participated in this event.

The Summer School programme included scientific, practical and social activities:

• Two keynotes presentation by Professors Cropanzano and Ashkanasy
• Roundtable discussions
• Research methods clinics
• Career management sessions
• Skills workshops on publishing and the research and development process
• Meet the practitioners session
• Networking

Azeitão, Portugal - 2014

The fourth EAWOP Early Career Summer School was held in Azeitão, Portugal from 1^st to 6^th September 2014. The summer school was funded by EAWOP.

Local organizers were Dr. Ana Passos, Dr. Silvia Dello Russo from the Instituto Universitario de Lisboa, and Dr. Luis Curral from Psychology Faculty, University of Lisbon, Portugal. Overall, 34 young scientists from 16 European countries participated in the event.

The summer school consisted of both scientific programme activities and social activities:

• Six keynote presentations by invited senior scholars
• One Workshop addressed to questions “how to” being a researcher, e.g. fund raising, research management, publishing results in journals and applications to European Projects.
• Supervised group sessions with senior scholars; the young researchers presented and discussed their own research activities
• Group work meetings according to research interests of the participants
• One interactive poster presentation session
• One excursion to a Portuguese factory
• Social activities.

The summer school had six invited keynote presentations and one workshop speaker:

• Jacqueline Coyle-Shapiro (Head of EROB Group, Department of Management at London School of Economics, UK)
• Batia Wiesenfeld (Chair, Management and Organizations Department at NYU Stern, US).
• Margarita Trindade (Research Funding Manager, Business Research Unit).

Zurich, Switzerland - 2012

The third EAWOP Early Career Summer School was held in Zurich from Autust 27th to September 1st 2012

The summer school was funded by EAWOP. Local organizers were Prof. Martin Kleinmann and his team from the University of Zurich. Overall, 36 young scientists from a variety of countries participated in the event.

The summer school consisted of:

• supervised group sessions (during which participants’ own research was discussed);
• three keynote presentations;
• three meta-skills workshops on publishing, funding, and research management; one poster presentation session;
• two careersteps group sessions (during which future research ideas will be discussed);
• one halfday excursion to a Swiss company.

The summer school had 7 keynote presentations:

• Eva Demerouti (TU of Eindhoven, NL) giving a presentation on “Employee well-being and performance: A quantitative diary approach”;
• Miriam Erez (Israel Institute of Technology, IL) giving a presentation on “Enhancing innovation in work organizations”;
• Martin Kleinmann (University of Zurich, CH) giving a meta-skills presentation on fundraising;
• Filip Lievens (University of Ghent, BE) giving a meta-skills presentation on publishing;
• Ann Marie Ryan (Michigan State University, US) giving a presentation on “Identity management in the workplace: Strategies, choices and outcomes”;
• Norbert Semmer (University of Bern, CH) leading the company visit;
• Sabine Sonnentag (University of Mannheim, DE) giving a meta-skills presentation on research management.

Valencia, Spain - 2010

The Second EAWOP Early Career Summer School was held in Valencia from the 11th to the 17th of September 2010. 

The summer school was funded by EAWOP. Local organizers were Prof. José Maria Peiró and his team from the University of Valencia. Overall, 36 young scientists from a variety of countries participated in the event.

The summer school had seven themes:

• Work engagement;
• Personnel selection;
• Team organization and team climate;
• Methodology, diary research;
• Organizational change;
• Evidence-Based Management;
• Workplace safety.

The summer school had 7 keynote presentations:

• Diary Research on Employee Well-being by Prof. Remus Ilies, Michigan State University;
• Construct Validity of Personnel Selection Methods and a session on Funds and Fundraising by Prof. Martin Kleinmann, University of Zurich;
• Work Engagement by Prof. Arnold Bakker, Erasmus University of Rotterdam;
• Work-team Climate and a session on Publishing by Prof Vicente Gonzalez-Romá. University of Valencia;
• Leadership and Occupational Health: Research and Intervention by Prof. José Maria Peiró, University of Valencia;
• Evidence-based Management and a session on Research Management by Prof. Rob Briner, Birkbeck, University of London;
• Workplace Safety by Prof. Nik Chmiel, University of Chichester.

Berlin, Germany - 2008

The First EAWOP Early Career Summer School was held in Berlin from the 6th to the 12th of September 2008.

The summer school was funded by the VolkswagenStiftung. Local organizers were Prof. Jürgen Deller and his team from Leuphana University in Lüneburg. Overall, 40 young scientists from 22 different countries participated in the event.

The summer school had six themes:

• Group Processes and Performance;
• Leadership and Management;
• Organizational Behavior;
• Motivation and Perspectives;
• Work, Stress, and Well-being;
• Advances in Assessment and Methods.

The summer school had 5 keynote presentations:
